We finally got here!
The trip over went smoothly with only 3 security checks, 2 customs line-ups, 3 custom forms filled out, multiple baggage scans and a close encounter with a NZ customs officer that ALMOST resulted in a $200 fine for not declaring hiking boots... oops. Quantas outdid themselves with a delicious chicken dinner AND breakfast, dispersed with snacks and free toothbrushes. We arrived to the pleasant surprise of Lynette Zink waiting for us at the airport, who drove us to her, Peter and Michael's beautiful home in Newmarket, Auckland (after I tried to figure out why the passenger seat was not on the right side of the car..)
Surprisingly energetic, considering the 30 hours of traveling, Kristin and I headed out to explore Auckland by foot. Mistake #1: Don't wear flip flops on the first day of "summer" for a long walk
Mistake #2: Don't assume that the free map at the airport will help you navigate the city
Regardless, after 5 hours of exploring, partly barefoot to avoid blisters, we returned much more exhausted than when we left. And we found a beach!... sort of. Anyways, Auckland is a BEAUTIFUL city, full of incredible parks, friendly people, wonderful scenery and interesting sites. More on that later...
